Over more than fifty years, the German-American Steuben Parade has grown into the largest event of its kind in the United States. No other festival in New York City is as colorful and as much fun as our parade with hundreds of music and dance groups, the wildly costumed and masked Karneval groups, the folks in their historic Tracht, the marksmen and all the other marchers on Fifth Avenue.
They come together every year to celebrate German-American culture and traditions, and to applaud the achievements of German immigrants to the United States. Among the historic German-Americans you´ll see in this year´s parade are baseball legend Babe Ruth and legendary author Dr. Seuss. With your events, we also celebrate the enduring friendship between our two countries - a friendship that has helped end the Cold War and felled the Berlin Wall. Twenty years ago to date, Germany was reunited following a historic international effort that the American people helped start and for which all Germans will forever be grateful.
Among our tens of thousands of friends, I only want to point out a few: Our Grand Marshals, who will lead the Steuben Parade up Fifth Avenue, our Miss German-America and her Princesses, who will greet spectators from their float… and: you. Because it is you and your family and friends we all hope to see at the parade, our spectacular Oktoberfest or one of our many exciting events during German-American Friendship Month.
